Kate Adam and Ariel
Valent form Invention in Time, an exciting Melbourne percussion
duo featuring marimba and vibraphone. Invention in Time specialises
in creating intricate soundscape compositions that encapsulate
the listener. With influences from world music and jazz, Invention
in Time takes you on a journey of stimulating original music.
Imagine being overcome by the beauty of your favourite place and
you are approaching the feeling of Invention in Time.
The combination of the two instruments produces an intriguing
tone, and one that is very pleasing to the ear. Invention in Time
is also interesting to watch: the instruments are unfamiliar to
many people and with both players using four mallets, the duo
never fails to draw a crowd.
Since
being launched in 1996, Invention in Time has performed extensively
across Australia and in Europe.
The
debut European tour in 2001 included the following highlights:
performing
alongside world renowned marimba players at the International
Percussion Festival in Belgium
two performances at Hotel Sonnevanck, a beachside institution
in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands
a special performance for Jewish New Year in Frankfurt, Germany,
an intimate show at Club Voltaire, an old leftist club, in Frankfurt,
followed by a red-hot jam with local and international musicians,
and
appearing as special international guests at the Percussive Arts
Society’s Days of Percussion in Stockholm, Sweden.
Notable Australian performances include Port Fairy Folk Festival,
Queenscliff Music Festival, Apollo Bay Music Festival, Southgate,
the new Melbourne Museum, the Bendigo Easter Fair and many times
at the Boîte World Music Café. The duo was described
as a standout act of the 2000 Apollo Bay Music Festival (Beat
Magazine, 19/4/2000).
Invention
in Time has also supplied soundtracks for slideshows and film,
collaborating with renowned Melbourne visual artist Megan Evans,
and others. The duo has also provided ambience at weddings and
other private functions. On all occasions the duo has been highly
acclaimed.
In
1998, Invention in Time launched their debut CD. Entitled Natural
Expression, it "delivers unhurried, undulating circular
explorations of rhythmic themes, making good use of the melodic
and percussive qualities of the instruments".
(The Age, 17/4/98).
