"Invention in Time was a standout act with their eerie
vibraphone sounds was a standout act of the Apollo Bay Music Festival"
– Beat Magazine
"…They
manage to apply a minimalist approach to their music, yet the
sound is full and enriched with rhythmic and melodic subtleties.
Invention
in Time played outdoors at Mietta’s Herb Garden, quickly
capturing the audience’s attention. Visually, the duo is
mesmerising to watch. Many audience members commented on the astounding
technique, which featured the dexterous use of eight mallets on
two instruments. They were particularly suited to the relaxed
atmosphere of Mietta’s but proved themselves to be capable
of adapting to just about any performance environment."
- Malcolm Russell, Festival Programmer, Queenscliff Music
Festival, St. Kilda Festival
"Invention
in Time is a unique Australian duo, brimming with ingenious compositional
ideas, expertly played. The consummate skill of both artists is
abundantly clear in live performance. They enthral audiences,
whether they be die-hard fans or first-time listeners. Part of
the pleasure of a live performance by Invention in Time stems
from the very special musical relationship Kate Adam and Ariel
Valent share. Their playing is so tight that it might be one person,
though the music itself evokes images of a larger ensemble, filling
the room with dense, rich sound, especially in a good acoustic
space….They are great ambassadors of contemporary Australian
World music"

"Invention
in Time are a Melbourne duo who take the enormous risk of combining
vibraphone and marimba with bog-all else and betting it won’t
bore the listeners to death. In large part, the pair – Ariel
Valent and Kate Adam – succeed. Their eight-track collectio,
Natural Expression delivers unhurried, undulating, circular explorations
of rhythmic themes, making good use of the melodic and percussive
qualities of the instruments."
– The Age
"…The
music is absorbing as it moves between exciting and intricately
woven rhythmic motifs and improvised jazz solos. The musicians
drew applause as they confidently moved into contrasting tempi.
The
performance has a strong physical component. The expert use of
four mallets concurrently was fascinating to watch, and in some
sections the duo used their own bodies as percussion instruments.
Their
compositions make good use of the contrast between deep and mellow
marimba and the bright, jazzy vibraphone. The exciting launch
of Invention in Time bodes well for the success of this talented
duo."
